The painting shows a woman in a moment of tense silence – a moment between distraction and direct confrontation. Her right eye rests firmly and intensely on her counterpart. It is not a fleeting glance, but a scrutinising, almost penetrating contact – clear, alert, conscious.
Her left eye remains hidden. Long strands of hair flow over the entire left side of her face, completely concealing it. These strands are not uniformly coloured; the colours seem to pour outwards like an inner state – light and warmth merge into embers and finally into depth.
The soft pastel tones make the colours appear gentle, as if they were lying like a veil over the scene. This creates a field of tension: the intensity of the gaze contrasts with the delicacy of the colouring.
“The Gaze” tells of duality – visibility and concealment, closeness and distance, openness and mystery.
