The Balkan geranium is considered a robust plant: it tolerates drought and thus seems ideal for a flowering landscape in view of climate change and increasingly hot summers. But its requirements are more complex. It only thrives on nutrient-poor soils. Due to the influence of invasive species and the growing nitrogen content in our soils, such poor sites are increasingly disappearing—and with them, the plants that have adapted to them. The Balkan geranium makes it clear that no species can endure the changes caused by humans indefinitely. And it reminds us that even resilience has its limits.
