In Provence

The painting condenses the characteristic landscape of southern France into a finely balanced pictorial structure that oscillates between figuration and abstraction. A tranquil river runs through the picture. On the near bank, slender, towering cypresses rise up, their vertical presence providing a quiet counterpoint to the flowing horizontality of the water.

On the opposite bank, the vegetation condenses into a zone of warm, reddish tones, creating a subtle tension with the cooler shades of green on the hill rising behind it.

The pointillist structure subsumes the material gesture of painting in favour of an optical densification, allowing the form to emerge from the interplay of the tiniest units of colour.

The vertical splashes of white paint along the tree forms appear like trails of light and reinforce the upward movement of the trunks. The painting radiates tranquillity – and yet one is tempted to look around the bend in the river.
